French Wax Bust of Flora on Plinth after Carpeaux

We are offering for sale this lovely French wax bust of Flora, on a polished beech plinth which is circa 1900. We have ascertained that the bust is derived from a relief sculpted by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, for the southern facade of the Pavillon de Flore, Palais Du Louvre for architect Hector Lefuel in 1865. The sculpture is called 'The triumph of Flora'.
The back of the bust bears an illegible inscription, monogram and a stamped mark.
Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux was born on the 11th May 1827, in Valenciennes, the son of a mason. He studied under Francois Rude and entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1844, where he won the Prix de Rome in 1854. He travelled to Rome for inspiration and remained there from 1854-61. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1853. In 1866 he was awarded Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. He died in Courbevoie on the 12th October 1775.
Height: 11 1/4" - 28.55cm
Width: 6" - 15.25cm
Depth: 5" - 12.6cm
Diameter of base: 3 5/8" - 9.2cm
Condition: Very good. There is no apparent damage or repair. As with all wax busts, it should not be placed in the sun, or near a fire, radiator or any other heat source.
