G. Goodwin Kilburne Jr. Watercolour Highland Rover

We are offering this well executed and finely detailed watercolour by the artist George Goodwin Kilburne RBA, who has signed the painting Goodwin Kilburne in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1930. The painting depicts a ship of the Nelson Line, the SS Highland Rover. The Highland Rover was a Screw Steamer built by Russell & Co. in 1910 for the Nelson Line (London) Ltd. From 1910, they ran a passenger service from London, calling at Boulogne, Corunna, Vigo, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo and Buenos Aires. In 1913, the company came under the control of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, although the ships still ran as the Nelson Line. The ship is probably pictured leaving the Thames estuary. The interesting touch is the bottle floating in the water.
We have been reliably informed that the only error that the artist made was the blue band within the white band on the funnel - this livery does not exist and the band would have been black for the Nelson Line, like the top of the funnel.
George Goodwin Kilburne Jr. RBA was the eldest son of George Goodwin Kilburne Sen. RI ROI RMS (1839-1924. He was born in London in 1863and was the eldest of 5 children by George Senior's first wife, who married again after the death of his first wife and had two more daughters. At the age of 17, he was listed as an artist, living with his parents in Steeles's Road, Hampstead, London. He married Ellen Alice Thompson (1867-1923) in 1890 and in the census of 1891, was livng with her and her family in Dorset. In 1901, the family, including two children Roy Goodwin (1892-1952) and Maude (1895-1979) were living in Uckfield Sussex, but by 1911, were living in a very nice large detached house, Winburne, Ashurst, Kent.
According to his father's obituary, in 1924 George was not present at his father's funeral as he was in California at the time. This was the year after the death of his wife Ellen in 1923. George Jr. died in London in 1938.
He was a figure and genre painter in both oils and watercolours and his style is very similar to his father's, so their paintings are often confused. He did tend to favour paintings with animal and sporting pursuits, although his father also had an interest in hunting. He was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1889. He exhibited 24 works at the Royal Academy, 47 at the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Oil Painters Institute 18, 4 at the Royal Society of Watercolour Painters and in Liverpool and Manchester.
The painting has been newly double mounted in acid free mountboard to complement and is newly framed in a very nice 1 1/8" gunmetal coloured traditional frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 13 5/8" x 9 1/4" - 34.6cm x 23.5cm
Frame size: 21 1/4" x 17 1/4" - 54cm x 43.8cm
Medium: Watercolours
