George III Flame Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase

This superb George III flame mahogany secretaire bookcase has some very fine details which elevate this piece to what can only be described as a fine example. It is veneered in flame mahogany throughout - the base has two doors with round panels with a double-crossbanded border separated with boxwood and mahogany stringing. It stands on delicate swept feet and a shaped frieze inlaid with a square central panel with an inlaid oval and two inlaid fans. The secretaire drawer is similarly veneered with oval panels, again double-banded in flame mahogany.
The interior is veneered in contrast in the best West Indian satinwood and is very well fitted with an array of drawers and pigeon holes with a central cupboard all with original axe head handles.
The doors to the bookcase top are crossbanded again in flame mahogany and are glazed with original hand floated glass panels separated with astragal bars which are crossbanded in mahogany with boxwood stringing.
The interior of the cabinet has been lined in fabric at some point with electric lights and glass shelves fitted for displaying porcelain. This can be converted back to a bookcase if necessary.
The cornice matches with a crossbanded frieze with a delicately moulded pediment.
This magnificent piece of antique furniture is in good condition with rich colour and patina,
circa 1790.
