Description:
Here is a fine quality George III oak border counties low dresser base, circa 1800, with attractive proportions, stunning mellow colour and in original condition. The dresser originates from the border area between England and Wales, in the counties of Shropshire, Hereford or even the Welsh side, in Powys. The design is typical of this area and it was probably made for a farmhouse or old manor.

The dresser measures 6ft 5⅛” wide and boasts a stunning original mellow oak colour and patination. It is of a quality craftsmanship it comprises a two plank oak top, which would have been taken from a large oak tree. The top features an elegant reverse moulding to the underside. Lovely oak medullary rays are prominent in the oak on the front of the dresser. The dresser houses three large cock-beaded drawers, decorated with mahogany cross banding, triangular mahogany key escutcheons and the original mahogany knobs, which adds a touch of sophistication to this country piece. The dresser boasts two smaller working drawers below the three larger drawers, which inherit the same construction qualities, flanked a lovely cock-beaded shaped central apron. This arrangement of drawers is slightly reminiscent of contemporary “fine” dressers.

The three large drawers retain their original steel locks, which are in working condition and come with a key. The drawer linings and bottoms are pine lined and constructed with hand-dovetailed joints. The dresser is raised on four simple square legs and features elegant raised panelled ends to the sides of base, and the original single plank elm backboard to the rear. The dresser frame has been constructed in the traditional peg and joined construction method.

The dresser features a superb mellow golden oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received (it cannot be recreated by re-polishing).

The dresser would look superb in any hallway, kitchen or dining room. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.

Dimensions:
Height = 67cm or 26⅜” or 2ft 2⅜”
Width (Top) = 196cm or 77⅛” or 6ft 5⅛”
Depth (Top) = 46.8cm or 18½” or 1ft 6½”

Condition Report:
This dresser is in good original condition. Nominal old use marks to the top and leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. In particular, there is historic evidence of indented scratches to the top (see photos) but no ink stains or burn-marks. Please note, these scratches could be sanded out and the top re-polished, however, you would lose the stunning original colour and patination this cannot be re-created if the top was re-polished. Therefore, we have decided to leave the top in its original condition and just apply a coat of beeswax polish on top of the original polish, as the severity of these indentations does not warrant losing the wonderful colour. The drawers feature their original turned mahogany knobs, original steel working locks (to the top three drawers only), along with a key and original drawer linings. There is no missing cross banding or cock beading to the drawers and frame. The back also features its original single plank elm board. As the dresser boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic mellow gold oak colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. The dresser is well constructed, solid in joint with no loose movements and is ready to be used.
