George III Silver Pap Boat, Stephen Adams, 1765
Here we have a well made early George III Sterling Silver Pap Boat from the 18th century. The pap boat is in the traditional style, resembling a small sauce boat but without a handle or legs. The initials S W are neatly engraved in 18th century style at the back of the boat.
Pap boats date back to at least the early 17th century but are most common in the 18th century. They were used to feed wet, soft food such as milk soaked bread to either babies or the elderly. They could be made from many materials but for wealthy families they would always be in silver and were traditionally fairly plain with little or no ornamentation.
This pap boat is made in London by Stephen Adams (I) and dates to 1765. Stephen Adams, who was later joined by his son Stephen Adams (II), was a skilled silversmith active from 1760 until his death in 1802, when his son took over the business. He was a smallworker primarily making pieces for use on the table.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the surface wear that has to be expected in an item that is over 250 years old. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pap boat is 11cm / 4.3ins long, 6.8cm / 2.7ins across and stands 3.6cm / 1.4ins high. It weighs a very respectable 65.5g / 2.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are nice and clear to read with just a small amount of rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter K for 1765 and the S A makers' mark for Stephen Adams (I).
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the item.
