George Melvin Rennie 1874-1953 Oil River Dee

1 of 6
We are please to offer this lovely oil on board by the Scottish artist George Melvin Rennie. The painting is signed in the lower left hand corner, not with the typical signature of the artist which is Geo. M. Rennie, but G.M.Rennie. We were contacted by a descdendant of the artist, who purchased the other one of the pair, who informed us that after the artist's death, his son, signed some of his father's as yet unsigned works.
The painting depicts a view of Invercauld Bridge, on the River Dee. The area around Braemar was the artist's favourite subject matter.
George Melvin Rennie (1874-1953) was a Scottish artist whose name at birth was MacDuff. He studied art part time at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen and became a full-time artist during the WWI. He opened a studio in Braemar in 1924. His favourite subjects were in the Grampians, but he also painted landscapes of Argyll, Ayrshire, Arran and the west coast of Scotland. He was a prolific artist. He is listed in the Dictionary of Scottish Painters.
Auction results for this artist may be found at artprice.com (159 listings), Findartinfo.com (86), arcadja.com (81) and other sites. His larger paintings reach prices into the thousands of pounds.
The painting is newly framed in a beaded 2 5/8" antiqued gilt frame, which suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
Medium Oils on George Rowney Birchmore Board, backed by pine panel.
