Georgian Carved Boxwood Picture Framing Mould

Georgian Carved Boxwood Picture Framing Mould, c1820.
Elaborately, deeply hand carved boxwood picture framing mould for traditional compo frame making.
Wooden moulds would have been used by picture framers to cast intricate moulding out of compo (composition of fine plaster, resin, oils and anima glue) to adorn gilt frames of paintings. (Replaced those expensive frames totally hand carved in wood and then plastered for gilding or painting.)
This large and heavy (2kg) mould is in amazing antique condition, showing minimal signs of age and use.
Period reinforcement to the back: 2 planks of wood attached to the back with old screws. Can be wall mounted but stands perfectly well.
A great piece of social history and stunning piece of decorative art.
Listed items are usually available to view at the Red House Antiques Centre in York.
Please contact, preferably by email, for shipping costs and payment options.
