Georgian Oak Housekeepers Press Cupboard

This is a nice original oak housekeeper’s cupboard dating to the George III period and perfect for the kitchen, dining room or bedroom in a country house or cottage. It has been made using well grained timbers which over the years have built up a nice colour and sheen.
This press has a traditional cupboard top with carved cornice and two panelled cupboard doors below. The unpainted interior is fitted with hooks and two shelves with supports for a third shelf (which is not supplied). The chest base has four drawers with brass swan neck handles and stands on bracket feet. The cupboard and top drawers are fitted with locks and although we have the key for the cupboard the lock catch does not have much movement and can’t be relied upon to lock the cupboard (the doors stay closed without using the lock anyway). There are also quite unusual brass escutcheons. The sides are panelled which is a sign of extra quality and it has been put together using the traditional pegged method.
The top cupboard section lifts off the chest base so access and moving within most properties should not be a problem.
We are offering this charming cupboard for sale without undertaking any restoration. The cornice is missing on the right side, there are losses to the beading around the drawers and there are some signs of drying/shrinkage – not bad for something nearly 250 years old.
