Georgian Solid Elm and Burr Elm Bureau c.1750
Such a rare bureau made from solid elm and burr elm, which is rarely found, and has the most fantastic colour and rich soft patina.
This beautiful provincially made bureau dates from around 1750 and is of a transitional design, still with the sliding well seen in the early 18th century bureaux and with two short false drawers but with the refinements of deeper lopers and cockbeading. The lovely interior with secret drawers forming the aprons over the pigeon holes and original central door. Every timber is solid elm including the drawer linings and backboards. The deep inner well is a good size and provides ample space for stowing a larger laptop.
The brasses are later but of an appropriate style and have been on the bureau for a very long time - probably mid-19th century. Minor marks and some small and very old restorations but nothing untoward.
Lovely shaping to the plinth, bracket feet and original principal backboards.
This rare little George II bureau will completely light up a room with its fabulous vibrant elm wood grain and rich colour. It is heavy, robust and entirely practical for daily use.
Dimensions are:
35.5 inches wide, 40 inches high and 22 inches deep.
When fall is open, floor to writing surface is 28.5 inches.
For metric please multiply by 2.5 I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
