Here is an example of a good quality Victorian Welsh oak joined high potboard dresser base and rack, displaying a good colour, circa 1870, in original condition originating from South Wales, most likely the Swansea area. Designed to reflect the Georgian period, this dresser has been constructed from earlier timbers, which is why the patination / colour is superior to other Victorian dressers in the marketplace of a similar age. The style and colour of this oak dresser was indicative to this area due to its hardy terrain, rich in mineral content. In South Wales, a simple lighter form of open-base potboard was common, compared to the more refined and heavier dressers made in mid and north Wales. The dresser boasts good proportions. The dresser features a cavetto cornice above an open rack, connected by decoratively shaped upright supports. The two graduating shelves, each with plate beads (to stop plates sliding forward) can support all manner of plate sizes on all levels. There is a further plate bead on the top of the dresser base. The base has been built using the traditional peg construction method. It incorporates a two-plank top with three drawers below. The drawers are constructed with pine drawer linings, including pine drawer bottoms, constructed with butt joints. The drawer fronts feature simple but elegant scribe mouldings, with cushion fronts they also boast their original brass swan neck handles and shaped brass back plates. Further below, is an extremely decorative open fretwork shaped apron. The base stands on three elegant ring turned legs to the front and block legs to the rear, which support an open raised fielded panel potboard.
As the dresser features its original polish, it boasts a superb rich brown colour, which has been created from the years of care and cleaning it has received.
This dresser is a sought after design, which makes it an excellent practical furnishing, piece and it is a stunning example of a dresser from this provenance.
This dresser is an excellent investment and would look superb in a variety of rooms from the kitchen, hall way or the living room. This dresser base would certainly grace any home. So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
