Gold Repousse Pair Cased Verge Pocket Watch, C1720

Peter Garon
London, c1710
Gold repousse pair cases, 54 mm
Verge escapement
An early and large London verge pocket watch, in fine gold repousse pair cases.
MOVEMENT : Gilded verge escapement, with engraved and pierced balance cock. Polished steel coquerette. Four unusual Egyptian pillars with oprnamental caps, large silver regulator disk and blued screws.
Signed (Peter Garon, London) and numbered (3004).
The movement is in good original condition, and is running well.
DIAL : Wonderful gold champleve dial, signed GARON, LONDON.
All in fine condition with just some minor losses to the black infill .
Good early 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands.
INNER CASE : 22ct gold, with maker’s mark IP.
In good condition but with some light bruises and slight compression around the band. The bow is a slightly later replacement in gilded brass.
The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The high dome crystal is also fine.
The back of the case is nicely engraved with a later dedication :
“Johanna Lups, geb. van (born in) Arnhem, 1768”
OUTER CASE : A wonderful gold repousse pair case, decorated with a classical scene showing Diogenes and Alexander the Great.
In very good condition, with just some light wear to the high points, mainly to the head of Diogenes.
The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.
The small stud or thumb piece on the bezel next to the catch is missing, leaving a small pin hole.
Peter Garon worked in London from 1687 until bankrupt in 1709. Free worldwide postage.
Payments by cheque, bank transfer, credit & debit cards and Paypal accepted.
