Goltzius Chiaroscuro Portrait Woodcut Maximilian I

Artist - Hubert Goltzius (1526-1583), a Reinaissance painter, engraver and printer from the Netherlands. We believe the cutter of the woodblock to have been Josse von Gietleughen (active c.1745).
Title - Rom Rex Maximilianus
Details - Maximilian I (1459-1519) was Holy Roman Emperor from 1486-1519. We believe this rare woodcut to be an original from Goltzius' book published in various different languages between 1557 and 1560, Vivae Omnium Fere Imperatorum Imagines, a C. Iulio Caes. Usque a Carolum V et Ferdinandum eius Fratrem. This is from the Spanish version, published in 1560. Goltzius' book was one of the first uses of the chiaroscuro technique in book form, and this portrait is striking in tones of brown with white highlights. We believe the portrait to be based on a coin from the period. The full page of the book is retained, but is folded at the bottom. There is Spanish text on the reverse of the page. The woodcut has been professionally mounted and framed in a modern frame.
Condition - Overall in good condition. The page of the book has been folded at the bottom. It has some foxing (brown spotting) and is a little discoloured. The frame has some scuffing and wear and a few knocks.
The approx. measurements are as follows:
Visible Image Size - 17.5cm diameter
Frame - 53.5cm by 53.5cm, 4cm deep. Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
We can arrange delivery of both smaller items and furniture - please contact us for details and a quote. Customers are also welcome to use their own couriers if preferred.
Payment can be made by PayPal, bank transfer, cheque [UK only], and cash on collection.
