Good pair of Welsh oak hall side chairs

One of the joys of being an antiques dealer on the Welsh Marches is that you occasionally come across some beautiful early Welsh oak antique furniture. Welsh oak antique furniture of the eighteenth Century was as well made as anything in Britain which makes it a pity that it is not valued more today. More than this though, as Welsh oak furniture was generally made specifically for the rural cottages and farmhouses of the valleys and generally stayed in these houses through the generations, they have all the charm and patina of a history of use. There is a real romance to these pieces.
This pair of oak chairs are wonderfully Welsh and rustic. They date to the end of the eighteenth Century and probably came from the Denbighshire region. The chairs show a combination of sophistication and rustic charm. I love the spandrel detail to the frieze and the ears to the top rail and the sheer rustic simplicity to the pierced decoration of the splat.
The chairs are well polished from use with good wear to the stretchers but equally they are of good sturdy construction. You can sit on these chairs, they are not just for decoration but they are very decorative and will look wonderful in a hallway or in a country kitchen.
The chair backs are 38.5 inches high and the seats are 18 inches wide and 18 inches high.
