Gothic Windsor Chair

A Victorian fruitwood and elm Windsor Armchair in the gothic style. With sculpted elm dished ‘saddle’ elm, crinoline stretcher. A quintessentially English design, this example is one of the most sophisticated interpretations of the Windsor form. A trophy form for collectors and designers who appreciate the sculptural qualities of its design and visual appeal as much as its durable function and comfort.
Although Windsor chairs are often considered a cornerstone of the country design aesthetic, this form and example imbue a high level of visual appeal. With pierced knee brackets, sculpted elm seat and a carved fretwork back, this chair has a high degree of sophistication.
A similar chair is illustrated on the cover of ‘Windsor Chairs’ by Michael Harding Hill. Other examples of this form can be seen in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and is illustrated in numerous articles and publications.
