This is a fantastic Antique Grand Tour Carved Lava Cameo Brooch which is in an unmarked Gold mount and has a safety chain attached. It is in good condition but does exhibit some age-related wear from handling and use as you would expect and measures approximately 2.5cm high.

Lava stone Jewellery rose to fashion in the Grand Tour era during the early 19th century and they continued to be a popular choice for a number of years. They were made in Italy from Lava Ash and rock which was then sculpted and carved into fine figures and then set into Jewellery for those on their Grand Tour travels to purchase as beautiful souvenirs. They are very collectable today.
