Great 18th Century Painting, Pastoral Scene
A great painting from the second half of the 18th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a splendid Italian landscape in Arcadian style, a pastoral scene set in the Roman countryside. The painting displays characteristics typical of a genre that enjoyed great international success and experienced a renewed splendor during the Romantic era. This painting is attributed to Johan Matiaz Wuerzer (1760-1838), a German master celebrated for his lively animal compositions. Cattle, horses, goats, and sheep are rendered with extraordinary naturalism and luminosity, within a classical landscape dominated by ancient ruins and a soft light.
