We are offering for sale this very detailed watercolour by the artist HERBERT PARSONS WEAVER, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1932. He has also inscribed it on a label verso as follows 3 The Old Curio Shop Lamballe Herbert P. Weaver RWA. RCA. RBA Hillside House Lyth Hill Shrewsbury. The painting depicts an old Curio shop, with the word Curios in capital letters over the unusual frontage, with its arched stone doorway with square skylights over it. There are stone steps up to the doorway with fluted wooden columns on either side. At the bottom of the steps a woman dressed in local costume in seated on a low chair, sewing. To her right is an assortment of bric-a-brac. Geraniums are flowering in a window box.

Lamballe is a small town in Brittany, France and this painting shows an old curio shop, which is situated just off the Place du Martray in the centre of the town. This building still exists today, as we have found a photograph taken from just inside the door, looking out onto the Place du Martray, on the site of the Mairie of Lamballe. We have also found an old postcard, showing the shop, on google.
