This is a delightful hand coloured copper plate engraving which dates from 1790. It comes from an atlas of the period 'Middleton's Complete System of Geography' and was engraved by Charles Grignon 1717 to 1810 who worked on many of Hogarth's famous plates.
The hand coloured print depicts a battle between a man and a tiger, or as it says beneath, 'A Battle between Man and Beast before the Great Moghul'. It is set within a gilded frame flanked by columns which suits it well. This engraving has good provenence and is part of a collection that was collected by and hung in he home of the Hon Andrew Fraser and his wife Charlotte. (See framers label verso). It measures 39 cms by 31 cms.
