Henry C.Brewer RI 1866-1950 Watercolour Bruges


We are delighted to offer this large watercolour by the artist HENRY CHARLES BREWER RI, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and entitled it 'Bruges'. The painting depicts a panoramic view of the skyline and spires of the city from one of the canals. The Bruges Belfry can be seen centre right. There are sailing barges tied up alongside the canalside to the left of the painting.
HENRY CHARLES BREWER RI, 1866-1950 was the son of the artist and engraver Henry William Brewer ?-1903, who studied at Westminster School of Art under Fred Brown. He was a landscape, decorative and architectural painter and etcher. He was elected a full Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1914, which dates this painting to after that year.
He travelled extensively abroad in search of subjects and visited Tangier in 1910. From the subjects of his paintings, he also visited Venice, Italy, Spain, Greece, Belgium and France.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1888-1948. at the Royal Institute (105 paintings), the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Fine Art Society (186). He also exhibited in the provinces and in Australia and New Zealand. There were two exhibitions of his work at the Fine Art Society in 1908 and 1911.
He was living at 34 Perryn Road, Acton, London W.3. in 1918 and died in 1950.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard to complement and is newly framed in an ornate bronzed gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
