Henry Garland Fl.1854-1890 Oil/canvas Cattle Drove

We are delighted to offer for sale this large oil on canvas which we attribute to the artist HENRY GARLAND, and which is signed by one of his many pseudonyms W. L. McCullum, in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a small herd of shaggy, Highland cattle, being driven by a couple of boys, wearing tam-o-shanters and with one of his trademark black and white border collies in attendance. The pallette used and the mist over the mountains are typical of the work of this artist.
HENRY GARLAND who flourished between 1854 and 1890, was an artist who lived in both Winchester and London and used various pseudonyms, for example, Valentine Thomas Garland, T. W. Garland, V.T. Garland, J. McGeorge, W. L. McCullum, H. McCullum and also possibly William Garland, who also hailed from Winchester. It is possible that he found a pseudonym beginning with Mc or Mac, would be more acceptable to Scottish markets.
He painted genre scenes, animal paintings and Scottish landscapes, invariably involving cattle drovers and herds of cattle in Highland landscapes with lochs and mist covered mountains. Some of his cattle paintings show a drover on a white horse and include a border collie dog.
Henry Garland exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and Suffolk Street under his own name and several of the others and his exhibitions are listed in Grays Dictionary up to 1893. His auction results are avilable at the usual sites under some of the pseudonyms, as well as his own name and his painting achieve prices well into the thousands.
Biographical details may be found in The Dictionary of British Artists, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and the Dictionary of British Artists by Grant Waters (listed under Valentine Thomas Gardner).
The painting is framed in a 3 1/2" gilt frame and slip and is ready to hang.
