A fine oil on canvas by Herbert Johnson Harvey (1884-1928) depicting an emotive gentleman dressed as a clown playing piano. The work is signed and dated 'H. Harvey 09' to the lower right.

The work has an intriguing subject and is painted with great verve. The subject's clothes almost pop from the gloom, yet the face remains half concealed with a deeply thoughtful, almost melancholy, expression just perceptible in the half light.

The work is housed in a later gilt frame which has a very small knock to the lower right and upper left but otherwise remains in a good condition.
