Heubach Porcelain Plaque Boy Jesus aft.Hofmann

We are offering for sale this wonderfully executed and quite rare handpainted German porcelain plaque in a circular ornate ormolu easel frame, which was made in France, according to the stamp on the support. The painting, by an unknown artist, is after a painting by the German artist Heinrich Hofmann 1824-1911 and is a cameo taken from his famous painting 'Jesus in the Temple', which he painted in 1881. As well as the easel back, the frame also has a wall hanging ring.
On the back of the plaque, as shown, is written in German 'Jesus knabe nach Hofmann', which translates as Boy Jesus after Hofmann. The plaque was made by Gebruder Heubach, or Heubach Brothers of Lichte in Thuringia, Germany. The company existed from circa 1840-1925, and the plaque bears their printed mark in black of a rising suns rays, over their initials GH within a circle. The company was known for porcelain figurines, vases, a very few plaques, dolls and paino dolls.
Heinrich Hofmann 1824-1911, came from an 'arty' family. His father painted watercolours, his mother gave art classes before her marriage and his two brothers was also very talented. He studied in the Netherlands, France, Belgium and in Munich and Darmstadt in Germany. After his mother's death in 1854, he painted the first of his religious works 'The Burial of Christ'. He then travelled to Venice, Padue, Florence and Rome, studying the work of the masters. He returned to Germany and took up a position at the Academy of Art in Dresden. Though he continued to paint portraits, he devoted himself more and more to paintings of Christ. He died in 1911.
