Horses by Alfred Worthington of Aberystwyth c.1900

Purchased locally this delightful large oil on canvas by the celebrated Welsh artist Alfred Worthington of Aberystwyth c.1900. A young man on a white horse leads a team of brown and black horses beside a stream or pond with a farm building and trees in the background. Painted in typically naive style in oil on canvas. Signed A Worthington in the lower left hand corner. With some minor damage, presented as found on the original stretcher and in a simple gilded slip frame.
Dimensions: width 40″, height 24″.
Alfred Worthington (1837-1925) is celebrated as the last of the artisan painters in Wales. Born in Dover the son of a naval lieutenant he is believed to have earned a living as a trapper in Canada before returning to England and then moving to Aberystwyth for his health in the early 1870’s. He established a photography studio in the town and, though he had no formal training also produced a prodigious amount of painted works for locals and the booming tourist trade. Typical subjects include local sites, maritime scenes and animals. He also produced works in enamel and painted on slate. Ceredigion museum holds a collection of his work.
