Important Marquetry longcase Grandfather Clock marquetry longcase inlaid %%alt5%%
We are delighted to offer for sale this superb marquetry longcase clock from the golden age of clockmaking with an 11 inch dial by the eminent clockmaker Joseph Norris Abingten (Abingdon) dating circa 1695.
The brass chapter ring dial is signed by the maker who is recorded as being born on 1649 and apprenticed to his bother Edward who worked in London . In 1668 he travelled to Amsterdam with his mentor Ahsasuerus Fromanteel and introduced the English longcase to the Dutch in 1675. He married and settled in Amsterdam and became a succesful and important maker with many of his antique clocks now exhibited in Dutch Museums. He returned to Abingdon in 1692 until his death. I have briefly skimmed the surface in relation to this fine maker but there is a plethora of other information available which will interest prospective buyers. This antique clock will circa 1695 .
As can be seen from the images the dial is beautifully made with well cast and chased spandrels , a well matted centre with ringed winding holes and engraving around the date aperture. There is decorative engraving between the spandrels.
The eight day duration five finned pillar movement is beautifully made and strikes the hours on a bell and is controlled by an internal count wheel . All the movement and dial pillars are latched (nine in total ). The collets are domed . An interesting feature is the use of a penny moon which is the earliest use I can find and no doubt influenced from his time spent on Holland who used this feature to determine the tides.
It has been professionally restored by Adrian Overton of Overton Clocks of Chesterfield who we trust to complete all our repairs and servicing. He is a member of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and conducts his business with great skill and integrity . The clock is , of course , in perfect working order.
It has a lovely brass cases pendulum and brass cased weights.
The walnut marquetry and bone inlaid case is the most wonderful colour and has a lovely finish having been sypathically restored by a master cabinet maker with 50 years experience. It really does look quite wonderful in the flesh and I welcome any viewings by interested parties.
The rising hood and spoon lock mechanism are present as are the steel hinges. Please note that the hood door does not open and has to be slid up for winding (illustrated)
The use of bone inlay is quite rare due to the difficulty of the process and it tended to be used in only the very finest cases , and even then, sparingly . This case has over 100 pieces of bone for the inlay which is the most we have come across.
Hopefully the images should show the item accurately but prospective buyers are urged to view this clock to see how nice it really is.
The overall condition is outstanding for any item of the great age with only the odd age related mark It is ready to go straight into the home and the overall condition will not disappoint the most discerning client .
It is a good size being only 6ft 11 inches tall to the top of the hood (plus 12 inches when the hood is lifted for winding), 17 inches wide at the case and 9 1/4 inches deep. The centre of the trunk is only 11 1/2 inches wide. The trunk door is 42 inches long
I would encourage interested parties to view the clock and my limited photographic skill do it no favours at all and certainly do not show the quality of the finish.
