Indian Mughal Miniature Painting of Shah Jahan

This is an extremely fine Indian Mughal miniature painting of Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal on horseback. A standing figure in a striped robe attends to them as Shah Jalan's horse rears up. The level of detail in their costumes and the horses' saddles and bridles is extraordinary. The miniature is beautifully presented in a double frame with fabric-covered mounts. A label on the reverse indicates that it was framed in Bombay. The framing would suggest an early to mid 20th century date for the miniature.
Shah Jahan was the fifth Mughal Emperor reigning from 1628 until 1658. Under his emperorship, the Mughals reached the peak of their architectural achievements and cultural glory. His favourite wife was Mumtaz Mahal, in fact he was so taken with Mumtaz that he showed little interest in exercising his polygamous rights with his two other wives, other than dutifully siring a child with each. Even during her lifetime, poets would extol her beauty, grace, and compassion. She died in 1631 giving birth to her 14th child. Shah Jahan had the Taj Mahal built as a tomb for her, which is considered to be a monument of undying love. As with other Mughal royal ladies, no contemporary likenesses of her are accepted, but imagined portraits were created from the 19th century onwards.
Dimensions: 38 x 32 cm
Weight 1.13 kg
Condition: The painting is in excellent condition. There is a little damage to the top left corner of the frame which has been re-touched to blend with the rest of the frame.
