James Hamilton ARSA 1853-1894 Oil Scottish Farm


We are offering for sale this oil on canvas by the Scottish artist JAMES HAMILTON ARSA, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a Scottish farmhouse next to a lane, with haystacks in the field opposite and a couple of goats grazing next to the edge of the track.
JAMES HAMILTON, 1853-1894 was a Scottish painter in oils of genre, historical and landscape subjects. He lived in Edinburgh. He was elected as Associate Member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1886. One of his very large oil paintings, entitled 'The Massacre of Glencoe' is in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.
He exhibited 44 paintings at The Royal Scottish Academy, 1 at the Royal Academy, 16 at The Glasgow Institute, l at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and 4 at The Manchester City Art Gallery.

As he is occasionally confused with an American artist by the name of James Hamilton 1819-1878, we have removed the listings by this artist from the numbers given above.
