James H.Crossland Oil 1852-1939 Welsh Scene

We are delighted to offer for auction this oil on canvas by the artist JAMES HENRY CROSSLAND, who has signed the painting J.H.C. on the lower right hand side and dated it 1878. The painting depicts a river scene with mist rolling over the hills and some rocks creating a small waterfall across the river. We have just discovered a faint inscription on the back of the canvas where it wraps around the stretcher which reads 'R. Ogwen Bethesda N.Wales'.
JAMES HENRY CROSSLAND, 1852-1939 was a landscape painter in oils. He was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire on the 22nd August 1852, but moved to Derbyshire and then to the Lake District, where he died in Ambleside, Cumbria in 1939. He painted some Scottish landscapes, but mostly worked in the Lake District and was a founder Member of the Lake Artists' Society in 1904. His son was a well known marine biologist. Judging by the number of paintings sold in recent times, he was not a very prolific artist, but a very good one, as his larger paintings attract high prices.
Biographical details may be found at The Painters of the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child, The Dictionary of British Artists, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters.
