James Mein Kelso Scottish Mahogany Sofa Table

A handsome Scottish Regency mahogany and rosewood crossbanded sofa table probably by James Mein of Kelso. The top with unusual curl figuring to the mahogany and rosewood crossbanded edge above a frieze with five sunken panels with beading and further rosewood crossbanding, the shaped beaded supports for the table flaps terminating with roundels enhancing the table in the open position, with two drawers to one side and the same decoration and false drawers to the other side allowing it to be used in a freestanding position, raised on four turned columns on a concave quadrapartite beaded platform base centred by a large boss with conforming tier above, on scroll legs with further bosses and with brass castors. Good colour and all joints firm, some veneer losses mainly to the side edges and the frieze but polished over or filled.

James Mein was the most famous cabinetmaker in the Scottish Borders, working in Kelso from 1784 until his death in 1830, when the business was taken over by his nephew (also James) and continued until 1851. Known for producing furniture of high quality, they counted among their clients the 5th and 6th Dukes of Roxburghe for Floors Castle, and the Earl of Haddington for Mellerstain
Please appreciate all our items are antique and as such may have minor scratches, marks, knocks, shrinkage splits signs of old woodworm, and minor losses to veneer, which combine with care and years of polishing to create an individual character and patina. We cannot describe each marks separately and therefore suggest you do take the time to request extra photos. We do offer a 14 day money back guarantee for UK purchases but cannot refund the return shipping cost.
