This is a pair of original Japanese woodblock prints forming a diptych by Utagawa Kunisada, Edo Period c.1853. It shows Kabuki actors Nakamura Fukusuke I as Male Doll (Obina) (facing left), Iwai Kumesaburô III as a Female Doll (Mebina) (facing right). Signed Toyokuni ga, in toshidama cartouche (on each sheet). Censors' seals: Mera, Watanabe, Ox 3. No blockcutter's mark. Publisher: Izutsuya Shôkichi, Japanese.

Another copy of this diptych is held in the Boston School of Arts collection. This pair would look fabulous framed in a simple black frame.

Dimensions: Height 36.5 cm by Width 25 cm

Condition: Both prints are good impressions with strong colours. They have been cut slightly into the image top left.
