Japanese Woodblock Print Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, 1886

An original Japanese woodblock print from 'One Hundred Aspects of the Moon' c.1886 by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) purchased from the Japanese Gallery in London about 40 years ago. Titled 'Inamura Promontory Moon at Daybreak', No.39, it captures Nitta Yoshisada praying to the Sea God and dedicating his sword to the sea at Inamura Promontory. Yoshisada was a 14th century general who found his army trapped between cliffs and an enemy fleet of warships at Inamura Promontory. Next day, the tide receded so Yoshisada's army could cross the water to defeat the enemy.
