J.F. Slater Impressionist Oil Moorland Landscape

We are delighted to offer for sale this large impressionist landscape by the artist John Falconar Slater, who has signed the painting J. F. Slater in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a misty, moorland landscape, with a small river running through a slight valley between wooded banks.
John Falconar Slater (1857-1937) was born in Newcastle on the 26th March 1857. He worked as a bookeeper for his father's corn mill, but then emigrated to South Africa, where he opened a store on a diamond field. When the store was badly damaged in a thunderstorm, he returned to England. He became a professional artist, although self-taught and painted in both oil and watercolours in a broad impressionist style. He painted landscapes, seascapes, particularly the North Sea in all its moods, animals, rustic genre and portraits and was also an illustrator.
He exhibited from 1885 - 1936, 22 paintings at the Royal Acadmey, 5 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 1 at the Manchester City Art Gallery and extensively in the North East. He was a very prolific artist.
He published 'Odds and Ends from an Artist's Note Book' in 1914.
He was living in Newcastle in 1899, moved to Whitley Bay in 1911 and spent the last 12 years of his life in Cullercoats. He was a Member of the Cullercoats Colony, a Member of the Bewick Club and President of the North East Art Club. He died in 1937.
