John Taylor & Son Of Edinburgh Walnut Davenport

Quality walnut Davenport made by John Taylor & Son of Edinburgh. On top of the davenport there is a very attractive moulded gallery which lifts to reveal an interior consisting of ebonised pen tray, compartment for envelopes and paper and two ink pot. The original red leather writing surface does show some wear but that only adds the charm and character of the piece. Under the writing slope there is four drawers, two dummy to the top and two working drawer underneath, all with original turned bun handles. The base has two fielded panels to the front and beautifully turned, ringed supports ending on bun feet. The right side has a bank of dovetailed graduated drawers with solid brass fittings the left side are false drawer fronts that match the right side. Wonderful colour and patination and in excellent condition ready to be put straight into your home
Starting out as a cabinet maker in 1825, John Taylor established the business in West Thistle Street, Edinburgh. Gaining success and a reputation for quality work, the business moved to 109/10 Princes Street with his son joining the firm. It was here, in 1852, John Taylor and Son were appointed 'Cabinet-makers and Upholsterers in Ordinary to Her Majesty the Queen’.
Further expansion came in the latter part of that decade in 1857, when they established their Rosemount Cabinet Works at Gardner’s Court, going on to become one of the largest, and best regarded, cabinet makers in Victorian Scotland employing several hundred local people.
