Joseph Edward Southall R.W.S., R.B.S.A., N.E.A.C. (1861-1944).
Signed with Monogram twice and dated 14th and 15th July 1887.
Pencil black chalk and brown wash heightened with white on taupe paper. Framed and Glazed.
J. E. Southall painted historical and mythological subjects and landscapes. He exhibited three works at the R.A. 1895-7 including 'Cinderella' and 'Man in a Fez'. He was born in Nottingham and lived in Birmingham and was the founder of the Society of Painters in Tempera, 1900. His more mature works show the influence of the Italian Primitives as can be seen in his highly accomplished Tempera paintings on view at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
