Joseph Horlor 1809-1887 Oil Welsh Landscape Sunset

We are offering for sale this Victorian oil painting by the artist Joseph Horlor, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a mountain scene at sunset, possibly in Wales, with the ruin of a castle high up upon a precipitous crag, with a still river below. We say probably in Wales, as the companion painting to this one, which has been sold, was entitled Aberglasyn, North Wales. Unfortunately, as the artist wrote the location on the edge of the stretcher, due to the age of the painting any writing on the edge of this painting can't be read. On a slope overlooking the castle in the distance across the river, sits a woman with a young child.
Joseph Horlor was born in Bath in 1809 and was a landscape painter of Welsh scenes and coastal views. By 1871 he was living in Bristol with his family. He married Elizabeth Sandys in 1830 and had four children. Both his daughters also became artists, Emma painting animals and Alice figures. He died in 1887.
He exhibited 13 paintings at the British Institution and 11 at Suffolk Street (later the RBA) between 1834 and 1866.
There are 8 of his paintings in the National Collection, 3 at Bristol Museum, 2 at National Trust properties, a at Shipley Art Gallery, 1 at the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath and 1 at the Holbourne Museum.
He may have been related to the animal painter George William Horlor, as they both lived in the same area of the country, but we have been unable to confirm this.
He is listed in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and Gray's Dictionary, where his exhibits are listed. Auction results for this artist are available at the usual sites.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3" gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 21 5/8" x 17 1/2" - 54.95cm x 44.45cm
Frame size: 28" x 23 3.4" - 71.1cm x 60.3cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Good conditon. There is one old repair to the canvas, which is clean and taut and there is no craquelure, paint loss or stretcher marks. The frame is new.
