Jugendstil small Striking Wall clock, Black Forest

A very stylish 14-day wall antique clock, by Philipp Haas & Sohne, from the Black Forest, Germany.
The case bears hallmark styling of the Jugensdstil, or Art Nouveau era, dating from around the turn of the last century.
The overhauled movement is enclosed within a box with side access panels and an open base through which the pendulum hands. The case is veneered in a deep red mahogany, with shallow domed top and base, and a sweeping flared pendulum backdrop with a fretted design. There are applied lacquered brass decorative mouldings, including a frieze to the pediment with a classical chariot scene depicted in relief.
The 14-day movement is on skeletonised plates typical of Black Forest clockmakers. It bears the Philipp Hass & Soehne trademark of a hare on the backplate, and the wooden backboard carries labels for the same. The coiled gong mounted on the backboard is also signed PHS for the same makers. The antique clock strikes the hours and the passing of the half hours on this gong.
Haas & Soehne (Sons) Company was founded by Philipp Haas in 1867. Karl Haas secured a world wide market of the "HAAS" antique clocks, especially high quality cuckoo antique clocks. In 1898 the sons took over, so the Haas enterprise was managed by the 4th generation. The company was dissolved in the year 1920.
