Kay Nixon 1895-1988 Watercolour Pheasants

1 of 6
We are pleased to offer for sale a delightful watercolour by the artist KAY IRENE NIXON (Kathleen Irene Nixon), who has signed the painting K. Nixon in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a pair of Red Golden Pheasants (chrysolophus pictus) which come from the mountains of Central China and tibet. If you look on google, it is possible to view images of these birds.
KAY NIXON (1895-1988) was a very well known animal artist and illustrator. She studied at Camden School of Art and Birmingham School of Art. She lived in India for 25 years, where she illustrated posters for Indian Railways, painted horse portraits, was an illustrator for the Time of India Press and painted a mural of ducks for the Bombay Natural History Museum.
After she returned to the UK, she illustrated 40 stories for children, 5 of which she wrote herself. She painted animals, both wild and domestic with skillful characterisation, as this painting shows.
She exhibited in Birmingham and Coventry from 1920-1926. She received numerous awards and, in 1980, she was made an Academic of Italy with Gold Medal.
For examples of her work and biographical information, there are 3 pages of information on google, under the search criteria Kay Nixon artist.
Auction results and further examples of her work may be found on artprice.com (74 listings), findartinfo.com (59), artnet.com (31) and arcadja.com (37). On 18th May 2010, one of her watercolours achieved £360 at Bonhams, London. A cat painting achieved £500 at Gorringes in 2007, and the same painting was estimated at £400-£600 in October 2009.
