Lamplough Watercolour Camels by the Nile
Victor Lamplough Watercolour Camels by the Nile 1907
We are offering for sale a very unusual and interesting watercolour by the artist VICTOR LAMPLOUGH, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated in 1907. The painting depicts two camels and their riders by the banks of the River Nile in Egypt. One of the riders is mounted on his camel, whilst the other is seating by the water's edge, while his camel is also resting on the bank. There are tall palm trees on the opposite bank.
The reason that this painting is interesting and unusual is that we find it very perplexing. The work bears an uncanny resemblance to the work of the famous artist AUGUSTUS OSBORNE LAMPLOUGH, 1877-1930, as well as the signature being very similar, except for the christian name. We have searched all our reference books, the auction sites and google and have been unable to find any listing for Victor Lamplough. Augustus Lamplough started painting North African and particularly Egyptian scenes in about 1902 and this was painted in 1907. Was this artist a relative, possibly a brother, or did Augustus use Victor Lamplough as a pseudonym? We must leave it to the buyer to decide.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone to complement and is framed in a 1 3/8" gilt frame that suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
Medium Watercolour/gouache
