Large Antique Silver Pocket Watch & Chain %%alt5%%
Large antique silver pocket watch, William Ehrhardt, with albert.

The watch has a key-wound movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner fitted cover.

The watch itself measures 58.6mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two case backs for Birmingham 1916, with a maker's mark for William Ehrhardt.

William Ehrhardt (1831-1897) was born in Germany, and served a watch making apprenticeship there before moving to England in 1851.

After working for a while with a London watchmaker, Ehrhardt set up a watch making factory in Birmingham. His aim was to make watches by using machinery as opposed to traditional watch makers.

When William Ehrhardt died in 1897, after his death his sons William and Gustav Victor carried on the business. By this time the company was producing some 500 watches per week.

The company continued to trade until 1924 so was in fact one of the last English watch manufacturers. By 1926, Gustav Victor was listed as a watch repairer rather than a manufacturer.
Back to our particular watch, the case is in good condition for such an early piece, just minor marking and a little unevenness to the back. There was originally engine turned detail to the back but most of this has worn off over the years.

The watch glass is in nice condition.

The dial has a very faint hairline crack to the sub seconds dial but otherwise is in nice condition. One of the hands appears to be a later replacement.

The watch comes with a single graduated albert chain and fob. The chain measures 33cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. The chain has a double sided silver fob with Birmingham hallmarks for 1899 with the makers mark for William James Dingley .

The chain and fob weigh 49 grams in total

The watch and chain will be sent in a new presentation box.
