Large Arts & Crafts Vase, Bretby, c.1895-1900

Here we have a very distinctive large late Victorian Arts & Crafts Vase from Bretby Art Pottery. The overall vase is very realistically modelled as the trunk of a tree with brown, beige and black glazes. On the front there is a smooth chestnut coloured panel which is decorated with a hand drawn bird and flowers in a pale amber colour. The vase dates to the period c.1895-1900.
Bretby Art Pottery, established in 1883, was the tradename of Tooth & Co Ltd. The company was founded by Henry Tooth and William Ault, former partners with Dr Christopher Dresser in the famous but short-lived Linthorpe Pottery. The company was based in Woodville, Derbyshire. Tooth & Co Ltd remained in the Tooth family up until the 1930s and then after the Second World War, Bretby refocused on making ceramics for industrial use.
Overall condition of the vase is good with just two small scuffs to the glaze around the edge of the base. There are no cracks and just a small amount of crazing in the decorated front panel. It is fully watertight. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase stands 34.2cm / 13.5 inches high and weighs just over 2kg.
The marks on the base show the classic Bretby \"Sunrise\" trademark, the pattern number 1416 E and the stamp ENGLAND.
Shipping in the UK is £9 by Hermes Tracked & Signed Courier.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
