Large framed map - British Isles by De Vaugondy

This is an impressive copper engraved French map of the British Isles with an attractive cartouche published by Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy circa 1760. Titled 'Carte des Grandes Routes D'Angleterre, D'Ecosse et D'Irlande' it is a detailed map of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland with many place names and roads. The cartouche shows travellers with horses outside an inn.
It is in excellent condition with a single fold as published and with original outline colour in green. It is attractively framed behind glass with a dark green mount and gilded wood frame all of which is in very good condition.
The map is attractively framed within a dark green mount and a gilt frame with black lines. The frame is in clean condition.
Frame size 76cm x 67cm
Plate impression 60 x 50cm
In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published 'The Atlas Universel', one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV. This achievement was proudly stated on this particular map by the engraved words 'Par le Sr.Robert Geog. ordin. du Roy' following the title.
Delivery: Due to its large size this glazed map will have to be delivered by my trusted delivery man. He can deliver this to most places on mainland England and Wales for £50.
