This is a large, heavy, fine quality sculpture of a bear holding two salmon in its jaws carved from a single piece of timber (probably cedar) by a Japanese sculptor in the 1970s. The bears fur has been stained in two tones: chocolate brown on top of the body and head, darkening to an almost black on the sides and legs. The pale bellies of the salmon contrast with the bear's fur.

This is the final bear to be listed from a collection of twelve museum quality Japanese carved wooden bears, most of which have now sold. The fine detail in the fur, the naturalistic pose and the size of this bear make it quite a statement piece.

Condition report: Excellent condition with some minor surface wear commensurate with age. The wear on the higher relief areas such as the nose has revealed the natural pale yellow colour of the wood. There is a small chip on one of the claws which is only visible when the bear is turned upside down.
