Large Mahogany Collectors Cabinet

An impressive and highly functional mahogany collectors’ cabinet, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, constructed in rich, warm-toned mahogany with excellent colour and patination throughout. Designed for the serious collector, this cabinet contains 30 shallow drawers, each fitted with glass viewing tops, allowing contents to be clearly seen while remaining protected.
The drawers retain their original turned mahogany knobs and brass label holders, many still bearing period labels, adding to the cabinet’s authentic scientific and curatorial character. The cabinet is enclosed behind a glazed door, opening to reveal the full bank of drawers, and stands on a plinth base, giving it both presence and practicality.
Such cabinets were traditionally used by naturalists, entomologists, and museums for the storage of specimens including insects, butterflies, moths, minerals or small antiquities. This example is stamped by Watkins & Doncaster, The Naturalists, Welling, Kent, a respected and well-known supplier of scientific equipment.
The cabinet is in good antique condition overall, with signs of age and use consistent with its history. Two drawer glass panels are cracked, which has been fully reflected in the presentation and pricing, but they remain in place and usable.
A rare and desirable piece, ideal for collectors, interior designers, or as a striking display cabinet in a library, study, or retail setting.
