Circa 1830, large and stylish mahogany wine coaster by James Mein of Kelso. The solid mahogany coaster, with its heavy gadrooned edge which drips down over the sides. On the top side of this, there is a scooped out centre with various concentric turnings. Beneath the top section, there is a large mahogany, deep bezel. This bezel covers the three brass and leather-covered wheels. The wheels would have been leather-covered for functionally sliding them down a dining table, to reduce the chance of damage. The Dukes of Roxburgh were one of the main large commissions that Mein of Kelso had. This coaster retains excellent colour and condition.

Size 5cm high x 24cm diameter.
