Large Mid 19th.c. Portrait of Henry Onslow c.1850.

Large mid 19th.c. portrait of Henry Onslow c.1850. The impressively moustachioed 3rd Baronet of Althain (1809-1870.) in oil on canvas. Standing before us resplendent in his scarlet uniform as an officer of the Cornish Militia, complete with sword, silver brocade epaulettes and collars and holding a plumed bicorn hat. Presented on the original stretcher in the original moulded and gilded frame.
Unfortunately the painter of the portrait is unrecorded though a contemporary portrait of the Baronet’s wife Ellen was painted by the celebrated Cornish artist Richard Thomas Pentreath. Despite the Baronetcy of Althain (bestowed on the 1st Baronet, naval commander Admiral Sir Richard Onslow in 1797 for recognition of his action against the Dutch at the Battle of Camperdown) being in the county of Lancaster, Henry Onslow was born and lived in Cornwall. The reverse of the canvas is stamped as being prepared by the great and long standing London artist suppliers Robesons of Long Acre. Some damage to the plaster mouldings on the frame but otherwise very good condition.
Framed Dimensions width 39”, height 48”, depth 4”.
