Large Victorian Tyg, Doulton, Lambeth, c.1890s

Here we have a beautiful late Victorian Stoneware Tyg. The flat based tyg is circular with three grooved handles. The body is decorated with leaves and scrolls in green and blue on a chocolate brown ground.
Tygs are English pottery mugs or tankards, usually with three handles (although some exist with as many as nine handles!) which allow hot drinks to be comfortably passed from one person to the next. They were produced primarily in the 16th and 17th centuries and then revived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This tyg was made in London by Marion Holbrook at Doulton's famous Lambeth factory and dates to the 1890s. Marion Holbrook was a much admired Senior Assistant at Doulton from the 1880s through until the 1900s.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of good service. It seems that this has been kept primarily as an ornamental piece rather than put to any use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tyg is 16.5cm / 6.5ins across the handles, 11.5cm / 4.5ins in diameter and stands 15cm / 5.9ins tall. It weighs in at 1.02kg / 35.9oz.
The underside of the base has the Doulton Lambeth stamp and the inscribed M H mark for Marion Holbrook.
Shipping in the UK is £16.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the weight and the value of the tyg.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
