Large Volume Antique Book, Faust, Goethe, German

Our Stock # 25251
This is a large volume antique copy of Faust by Goethe. A German, bound fiction book, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1880.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) was a German writer, poet, playwright, and philosopher, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Western literature. His most famous work, Faust, is a tragic play that follows the story of a scholar who makes a pact with the devil, in pursuit of ultimate knowledge and pleasure. The play, written in two parts, explores themes of ambition, human limitations, and redemption. Beyond Faust, Goethe made significant contributions to poetry, drama, and prose. Goethe was deeply involved in science, particularly in optics, and his Theory of Colours (1810) presented a critique of Newtonian colour theory.
Of superb proportion, with large pages and easily legible print
Displays a desirable aged patina, in lightly time worn and intact order
Bound in half calf over marble paper, with ribbed spine and gilt titling
Published in German, this is the Erster Theil, or first part
Fascinating theatre posters added to the inside pages, for a performance in May 1876
Illustrated with incidental detail and lede images, from plate engravings
