A superb fully hallmarked late Victorian gold locket crafted by William Clark Manton in 1899. This elegant portrait locket is suspended from a beautiful antique 18 inch fully hallmarked gold necklace. The front is ornamented with a shield cartouche which symbolises the desire to protect the wearer. Ivy and acanthus leaves form a pleasing composition. Ivy represents deep friendship, wedded bliss and fidelity. Acanthus leaves symbolise the desire for everlasting life. The hinges and catches work perfectly.

The original frames, portrait backings, portrait and clear portrait protectors are present.

The cartouche is inscribed in an elegant font which is open to interpretation. The letters could read, J C, I C, H, J E, I E. This style of font is seen in the Victorian era and it is so artistic that it becomes part of the design.
