Liberty & Co Arts & Crafts Oak Bureau Bookcase

An attractive Arts & Crafts oak motto style bureau bookcase in golden quarter-sawn oak firmly attributed to Liberty’s of London. Featuring a moulded carved cornice with inscription ‘J.S. & L.E.S. TO V.R.C. JUNE 7TH 1911’ above a leaded green bullion glass door and open shelves, the bureau fall-front opening to reveal various pigeon holes and a quarter-sawn oak writing surface, with a drawer and pairs of cupboard doors below and three further drawers to the side. With Liberty design shaped hammered copper handles and brass locks to the bureau and drawers.
In good solid condition and very well made, this would have been a very special commission as large bureau bookcases were the most expensive items in Liberty’s 1911 catalogue. The handle is missing from one loper but we can fit another brass drop to match as closely as possible.
Overall dimensions at the largest points are approximately
Width - 57in (144.5cm)
Depth - 20in (51cm)
Height - 51 1/4in (130cm)
Writing area
28 3/8in wide x 24in deep x 29 7/8in high
(72cm wide x 61cm deep x 76cm high)
Please contact us for additional photos as we are limited in the number we can upload.
Ref: 0680 Please appreciate all our items are antique and as such may have minor scratches, marks, knocks, shrinkage splits signs of old woodworm, and minor losses to veneer, which combine with care and years of polishing to create an individual character and patina.
