Lovely Black Japanned Desk with Landscapes & Birds
Once the desk of the late artist Fanchon Frohlich – we will pass over numerous letters, a photo of Fanchon and peacock feathers which belonged in the desk to the next owner. We’ve seen an image, via BADA showing the desk at her Liverpool home perched on the landing at the top of the stairs.
Fanchon Fröhlich, who lived and worked in Liverpool from 1949 until her death in 2016 graduated in The Philosophy of Science from the University of Chicago and, following post-graduate courses in Linguistics Philosophy at Oxford University and in Fine Art at the Liverpool College of Art, she worked with eminent post-war British abstract expressionist artists and printmakers, such as Peter Lanyon in St Ives in the 1950s and William Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris in the 1960s. Lanyon and Hayter were perhaps the two greatest influences on the expansive, gestural, sweeping qualities in her work, which can be found in collections at The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and The Bowes Museum in Northumberland.
The desk with its 6 short drawers topped with 1 longer drawer sits in lovely worn condition. The drawer fronts and sides are highly decorative with Kounotri – White Storks symbols of longevity, good fortune and happiness and detailed oriental landscapes. The green linen top, surrounded by simple painted flower petals is a little frayed, marked and stained with faded paint in places but usable. The drawers are running well and are clean inside with aging. We do have some loss to both sides of the lacquered finish but not fresh.
An utterly delightful desk with provenance.
