Stunning Flame Mahogany Pagoda Longcase Clock by John Ellicott FRS c1760
The beautifully detailed mahogany case featuring brass reeded columns to the pagoda hood with fine fretwork and silk apertures that allow the sound to escape. The original brass finials are well made and compliment the quality of the overall elegance of this clock
The five knopped pillar movement carries all the hallmarks of this famous maker and features a very accurate deadbeat escapement that embraces 10.5 teeth. The movement has received a full overhaul by our Jessica Elliott and comes with a full three year guarantee for your peace of mind in this investment.
The well chased And finished spandrels on the brass dial highlight the delicately made thin hands that solidly and precisely display the time and this is no more illustrated with the action of the second hand. The well engraved chapter ring proudly displays the name Ellicott London below the square date aperture and well matted centre
John Ellicott (London, 1706–1772), was an eminent English antique clock and watchmaker of the 18th century.
His father, a Cornishman, John Ellicott (-1733), was also a clockmaker and had been admitted to the Clockmakers' Company in 1696. John Ellicott (jnr) conducted business first from Austin Friars Street EC2 and later from Swithin’s Alley, Royal Exchange, and in 1738 was elected Fellow of the Royal Society. He showed a keen interest in scientific matters and maintained an observatory at his home in Hackney. He was best known for his work on inventing the temperature compensated pendulum and his use of the cylinder escapement. His quality workmanship led to an appointment as Clockmaker to George III.
His son Edward (-1791), joined the business in 1760. Over their twelve-year partnership, their antique clocks were simply signed Ellicott, London.
John’s son was reportedly academically brilliant and also very highly skilled with his hands. It is remarked in many text books that there were few men of his equal in this regard. Just after his fathers death in 1733, in 1738 he was elected to the Royal Society. This was an immense achievement. He had some really important and influential sponsors for this position.
Ellicott carried out some important work and research in this role. He looked at various things like the effect of two pendulums upon each other. Also the variability of the length of a pendulum with latitude. It is without doubt though many people who remember Ellicott will remember him for designing what I call the ‘Ellicott Pendulum’. An amazing compensated compensated pendulum. He worked to try and eliminate the disadvantages of the grid iron pendulum, Harrison invented.In 1760 this famous clockmaker John Ellicott FRS , took his son Edward into the business. Working together until his fathers death in 1772. Edward ended up being a special clockmaker in his own right. He became the Kings watchmaker and was Master of the Clockmakers Company. Edward died in 1791 and the business continued with Edward’s son, Edward. An entire century of Ellicott’s, a clockmaking dynasty. Clockmaking did run in families’ but none left their mark as great as the achievements of this family. They always strived to better on what had been achieved before.
